Chapter Fourteen

Lincoln

THE GUN WASN’T A BIG deal, but she was clearly alarmed by it. I didn’t want her to be afraid of me, though I shouldn’t care even if she was. In fact, it might be better in the long run. I didn’t want her coming back for a visit. She needed to stay far away from me. I couldn’t risk someone following her up to my cabin.

The thought of her leaving didn’t just make me feel a little bummed, it was a whole new worry. Who else would she tell about the man she met in the woods? I didn’t give her my full name, but Lincoln was unique enough that if she did tell the wrong someone, it could end badly. All it took was a whisper of a rumor to get back to the people that would prefer to see me six feet under. The risk was high, but I couldn’t very well force her to stay. I also didn’t want to tell her she couldn’t tell anyone she saw me. That would only raise her interest, and after only knowing her for a short while, I knew she wouldn’t let it go. She would keep asking questions until she got the answers she was looking for.

As I walked back into the living room, she was pulling stuff out of her bag. I didn’t miss the phone sitting there on the floor. I didn’t like that she had it, and I didn’t like that it was on. If she was a plant sent in to find me and set me up, that phone would give anyone her exact location. My location. Still, I didn’t want to believe she was anything but exactly who she said she was. I was leaning towards believing her, but I couldn’t completely let it go.

“Be careful in there,” I told her, when she got up with a bundle of clothing in her hand.

“In the shower?” she said, with a smirk.

“Yes. I don’t want you to slip and fall while I’m out.”

She gave a small laugh. “I’ve been showering by myself for a long time now. I’ll be okay.”

I nodded, knowing she was right. “I’ll be back in about thirty minutes.”

“Do you really need to go out? I can hear the wind and the rain slamming into the windows.”

“Yes. I’ll be fine.”

“There’s a lot of wood on the porch.”

“I know, but the way this wind is blowing, it’s going to drive rain right into my wood shed. I need to get more of it on the porch so I can keep it dry. I’ll get the fire going when I come back.”

“I wish I could help you.”

“No, you don’t. Have you looked out the window? It’s nasty out there.”

She looked out the window. “Ugh, it really is. Be careful.”

I nodded and walked outside. The weather was shit, and rain was the worst. I would take the snow any day of the week over the rain snow mix that was coming down now. I stood under the protection of the porch, considering my options.
